Anyone have any opinions on the best pet, or the best combination of equipment and pets. Just curious.

Possibly not the best equipment but one of the best is dragon eye, especially if you can get it refined to where it's always ambidextrous. The best pet is difficult because all of them, especially the evolutions are really good.
