Void nightmare

Hi, I have a couple of questions about the void nightmare. First off, if this makes sense where does it take place? it seemingly has no effect on the game as a whole the monster I choose don’t gain levels outside of the nightmare, I don’t get the item I collect in the nightmare, etc. Secondly, is there a way to get such things in the actual game. I would like to have a chance to raise a tabby along with the other pet that is exclusive to the void nightmare.
