What does Defense do?

Does defence reduce damage like this?
Say something does 1000 damage and defense is 100 of the pet being attacked. Does that mean the attack would to 900 which is the amount of the attack damage (1000) minus defence (100) so the attack would end up damaging for 900?
Put another way, does the amount of defence reduck attack damage by the precise amount of defense?
Please explain how defence works.

Yes, defense works exactly as you stated in your example. 1,000 damage hitting a pet with 100 defense would take 900 damage. Also, this happens after element multipliers.
